A 37-year-old woman was shot in the head by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in south Minneapolis yesterday during a federal immigration operation. The incident has incited conflicting viewpoints from political leaders and federal authorities. It has stimulated a political row over the US administration’s enforcement actions.
President Donald Trump has defended the killing as an act of self-defence, as the administration officials clarified that the agent fired a shot to protect himself as the woman used her vehicle to threaten officers. Trump said the woman “violently, wilfully, and viciously” ran over an ICE officer, who “seems to have shot her in self-defence”.

Trump asserted that such incidents were taking place for “the Radical Left is threatening, assaulting, and targeting our Law Enforcement Officers and ICE Agents daily”. He justified the agent’s action, saying that ICE officials were “just trying to do the job of making America safe.”

Highlighting that there is a spike in vehicle-ramming attacks against federal agents, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said, “Today alone in this country, there have been four different domestic terrorist attacks on federal officers by the ramming of vehicles.” Noem called the incident “an act of domestic terrorism.”
The Minnesota officials have rejected the justification after viewing a video of the incident and called for an independent investigation into the case.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said he had reviewed video of the shooting and dismissed the self-defence claim. “Having seen the video of myself, I want to tell everybody directly that is bullshit,” Frey said, calling it a “garbage narrative”.
Blaming the ICE for creating chaos in the city, the mayor demanded that ICE must leave Minneapolis. He posted on social media, “The presence of federal immigration enforcement agents is causing chaos in our city. We’re demanding ICE to leave the city immediately. We stand rock solid with our immigrant and refugee communities.”
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also dismissed the US Department of Homeland Security’s narrative, requesting locals to “not believe this propaganda machine.” He ensured the state would conduct an expeditious investigation to ensure accountability and justice.
The governor has also activated the state’s Emergency Operations Centre and issued an order warning the Minnesota National Guard to prepare for possible unrest. However, he has appealed to the protesters to remain peaceful.
In a sharp attack against Trump’s self-defence claim, Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar described the killing as “state violence” and demanded a full, comprehensive investigation and legal action against the agency. She said the killing was unconscionable and reprehensible.
Also, Congresswoman Betty McCollum accused the Trump administration of directing hostile enforcement tactics and sowing chaos, division, and distrust. She also demanded that ICE end operations in the state immediately.
The shooting was reported near East 34th Street and Portland Avenue at around 9:30 a.m. (local time) on 07 January. Minneapolis police later identified the woman as Renee Nicole Good. Police stated that she was struck in the head and was declared dead at a hospital.
ICE told the media that some violent rioters blocked its officers while they were conducting a targeted operation. He further added that one of these protesters weaponised her vehicle and tried to run over the law enforcement officers. In the statement, ICE termed it “an act of domestic terrorism.” It further stated that the officer in question fired defensive shots “fearing for his life”.
The investigations in the case are being led by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the FBI.
